SLABS ARE KILD DRIED AND USUALLY SOLD FLATTENED AND SANDED TO 80 OR 100 GRIT. PLEASE CALL WITH ALL LARGE SLAB ENQUIRIES SO WE CAN CHECK TO SEE IF WE HAVE SIZES YOU NEED !
AS OF 12/15 WE HAVE A FEW SLABS FROM AMBROSIA LOGS - the largest slab is about 2’‘rough x about 24’‘x 120’’. We have cut, planed and sanded a few - so there are some narrow pieces about 14’’ x 60, and a few 30’‘x 60’’ pieces. They usually clean up at 1-5/8 - 1-3/4 thick.
Below on the right is an ambrosia slab wet with water to show how a linseed based oil finish like Watco or Arm-R Seal would darken the wood.
The piece on the right would stay lighter in color - as you see here- if you used General Finishes High Performance water base poly AKA (GFHP) The UV filter in GFHP helps keep the wood the color that you see.
We always recommend you run finish samples on the back or on cutoffs before deciding /committing to a finish !!! As always properly prepping your lumber by progressive finish sanding - 80, 100, 120, 150 and finishing with 180 or 220 will yield best results.
We also have a selection of thinner walnut and olivewood slabs. Most walnut slabs are 3/4 - 7/8 thick, 4-8 feet in length and 7-15 inches in width. The olive wood slabs tend to be between 8-12 inches wide and 4-5 feet long. Some of the walnut is sanded to 80 grit, some is skip planed. All olive is sanded to 80 or 100 grit - ready for finish sanding !
